Reports to: Vice President of Communications and Signals 


Job Overview: A Signal Maintainer will work with other members of the Signals department or autonomously to plan and execute projects across the Reading and Northern system as they pertain to the signaling aspect of our railroad. These projects include, but are not limited to, routine maintenance and testing on signals, installing cable, installing and testing communication, and signal equipment.


Responsibilities and Duties May Include, but Not Limited to:

 • Complete assigned work tasks each day individually or as a team member.

 • Report to various locations on the railroad for work each day. 

• Perform essential maintenance and scheduled testing to signal equipment.

 • Installation and testing of various railroad wayside equipment and systems.

 • Performing basic network troubleshooting of USB, Serial, CAT5, and fiber connectivity. 

• Cable and fiber trenching and installations. • Ability to install, repair, and maintain 2-way radio equipment. 

• The ability to adapt to all other duties that are assigned as needed. 

• Working hours may vary based on emergencies, company needs, and being on call 24/7.

 • The ability to work up to 12-hour shifts as required. Qualifications 

• Ability to climb ladders and poles (over 50’). 

• Ability to read and understand electrical and construction schematics. 

 Ability to use and understand test equipment, including but not limited to digital, analog, fiber, mergers, and SWR testing and calibration equipment.

 • Ability to work around loud machines and equipment.

• Ability to work alone or in mixed groups. 

• Ability to work in all kinds of weather conditions.

 • Must be able to lift up to, but not limited to, 70lbs. 

• Ability to bend, stand, climb, kneel, or sit for long periods.

 • Practical verbal and written communication skills. 

• Must be at least 18 years of age.

 • Finger dexterity, operation of motor vehicle, equipment operation, managing multiple tasks/projects, close attention to detail, and adapting to an ever-changing work environment. 

• Valid driver’s license and an operational vehicle to commute to/from work.

 • Accept being exposed to chemicals, noise, dust, and heights. 

 The applicant must pass a pre-employment and random drug screen, physical examination, and breath alcohol test. All employees are randomly tested for drugs and alcohol as a condition of employment.

• General understanding of PC usage, including operating systems and hardware. The ideal candidate will one or more of the following: 

• Be experienced with Ubiquiti or equivalent CLI network setups and maintenance. 

• Have a CDL Driver’s License.

 • Background in networking, electrical, communications, or construction
